Business Update

Entrepreneur: Angela Akello

The economy of Uganda booms during festive seasons especially Chrismas. Every body works hard to get money to cater for his/her family during charismas. This has helped this business peak thus more produce is stocked and more sales are generated. There .is much expectation of high profit after Chrismas since he bought enough stock that will take him through this Chrismas season. The expected sales goes up 500,000/= which will give him a profit of 100,000/= since the stock coasted him 400,000/=.

The items bought among others include:

1. Sorghum 6. Beans

2. Millet 7. Peas

3. Maize 8. Groundnuts

4. Dry cassava 9. Cashew nuts

5. Rice 10. Sun flower

He bought one sack of each item which weighs 100 kgs and therefore, he roughly had a stock of 1,000/= kgs (ten sacks). He expects to pay part of the loan after the sales of Chrismas season. The business is boosted and all the expectations are met.

Thanks, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Hullo my funders I send you my greetings all the way from Eastern Ugand. Thank you so much for your support and I thank God for his hand upon me and my business. I have been a farmer for all the last years of my life, specialized commercial agriculture and early last year is when I realized to adopt both agriculture and selling of produce in bulk as I continued with my business, life became a bit difficult, all the profits I could get from my business would all go for purchase of family basic needs. Thank God for Kiva came my way and I was rescued from my way of grave of poverty.

When I received the loan, early October 2005, I widend and increased on the number of gardens on my agricultural business, I could get a lot of produce from my gardens and much of this produce was vegetables that I planted immediately and early December I was able to harvest and reach them to the market at the same time I had opened by November a big lock up shop selling produce of different categories like rice, millet, sorghum, groundnuts and others and with all this, was able to begin realizing a lot of profits in November 2005 and of late last year in the month of December I sold a lot of produce especially rice, beans and posho since the Christmas season was approaching, I got a lot of profit and since then the loan has helped me increase my business, and having good balanced diet, eating meat four time a week and now early this year I see paying school fees of my three children in secondary will never be aproblem again now I have the money, my business is increasing day by day and I have seen the hand of God on my business than ever before.

I give glory to God every day because of you my funders and it’s my prayer that the loan will not stop me only and I will be very, very grateful that you will be able to extend more loans to other more people, my life has changed in all ways.

May the heavenly Lord, God our Father bless you all.

Yours in Joyful living,

Angella.

Greetings to you all the funders of Kiva. I wish to extend greetings to you from Angela who is also thanking you so much for the support you have given her through Kiva loan.

The business of Angela is doing very well, she now has more stock and many buyers flock her store.

When I visited her business, she told me that the business has helped her in various ways; For example her children’s school fees are catered for, she is able to feed the family with good diet once in a while. The community members around the area where she operates are grateful for the business because she buys from them whatever little produce they manage to harvest from their gardens.

She is very committed to her business and refunding the loan money, she is been able to pay installments monthly, even she has already finished paying the installment of this month.

She is so grateful to all her funders who have changed life and also to reach a level I have achieved so for.

Thanks again so much for all your support you are giving to poor of the poorest. May God bless you abundantly.

I will keep you updated of any new developments.

Angella started this business by planting an acre of cassava, 500 suckers (seedlings) of pineapples, one acre of maize, groundnuts etc. Angella being a capable business woman, she borrowed a loan of $500 for lifting up her business. Through that loan, she is able to stock more produce and sells it in wholesale and retail to his customers.

Angella is very grateful for what Kiva is doing for the poor. She now gets in a day profit of 40% as compared to what he used to get was 20%. Her family too is doing very well.

Thanks,

Hellen

Angela is almost finished with her repayments!

Entrepreneur: Angela Akello
Location: Soroti, Uganda

Greetings from Katie Camillus, Kiva field intern traveling in East Africa to visit Kiva partners and their entrepreneurs.

Today I visited Akelo Angela and her husband Pastor Steven in their home near Serere, Uganda. They have done a fantastic job with their loan, and it is really helping them to improve the lives of their family. They have a farm, where they grow corn, sogam, cassava, ground nuts (peanuts,) sweet potatoes, and pineapples.  Before they received the loan, this produce was their sole source of income.

With the loan money along with their savings, they bought a chainsaw to cut timber. The machine cost 1.5 million shillings, or about $800. They now rent a store to sell timber in the local center for 10,000 shillings (about $6) a month. They also travel to Soroti town to sell the timber there. Since they started this business, they have made a profit of 3.5 million shillings, or about $2,000.

They have used their additional profit to improve their agricultural work, buying 7 more acres of land (to add to their original 4) for 500,000 shillings an acre, or about $275.  They have hired people to help with the weeding and hired oxen to plow, since they don’t own any themselves.

Angela and Steven were both very enthusiastic about how much the loan has improved their lives.  They eat better, dress better (Angela said with a shy smile as she looked down at her beautiful traditional gomas dress,) and are able to send their children to better, private schools. Of all the loan recipients I have asked about how the loan has benefited them, Angela and Steven are the first that have responded by saying that they are able to help the poor.  I was very touched by that. They said they frequently help with needs in the community -- they take sick people to the hospital, and they have contributed timber and iron sheets to build a church.

The couple still does not have enough storage space to store their produce inside, so much of it is sits around the edges of the buildings in their compound. Since it is now harvesting time for corn, the market prices are very low, so they are keeping it until the prices go up again and they can make a good profit.  They are hoping to move soon onto their new land, which is closer to the main road and would make accessing town much easier. There they would also build a bigger storage house for their crops. They also hope to buy two oxen so that they don’t have to pay to hire them for plowing three times every season.

One of their customers which buys timber, a furniture shop in town, has failed to pay for the timber that was delivered to them. The price was 1.5 million shillings (about $800,) so they are very concerned. They don’t want to take the customer to the police, however, because it is a relative of the family. They are therefore trying to get the shop to pay their bill in small installments. That would be a big loss for them!

They look forward to finishing repayment of the loan this month. They are incredibly grateful for the loan and proud of all their successes.

Thank you!

By Angella Akello

Report from the business owner

I’m Stella working with Kiva Office  Africa, Uganda. I visited  Angella Akello to evaluate on her business of Agriculture and Produce. She is doing well, she has increased stock in her shop and captured more customers, her turn over is good. She gots profits of about 60% this month that is July. She purchases items like maize, millet, groundnuts, rice beans, sorghum, wheat flour and others.

On the side of Agriculture, she has planted this year maize, one and half acre and she has been weeding her pineapple which is also one  acre and she expects to have good harvest which can add n her sock.

She is doing well plus her family. She says much of her profits was going to the weeding and planting of those crops she panted. But she will be able now to pay back the loan money after her harvest.

She requested me to send greetings to kiva donors and supporters that she is so grateful for the support kiva offered her to borrow her a loan.

Thanks.

Rehoboth

Report from business owner.

I send my sincere greetings to all supporters of Kiva who made it a point that, lives of the poor in Africa change. In the visit towards the business of Angella, I found out that, he has stocked some produce that she is storing waiting for good prices in order to sell and get better profit than the buying price. she gets many customers who even at times carry produce by their bicycles and heads and take it to her home and she buys it. Her customers sell to her produce at a reduced price. Also the crops that she had planted, she gave yield to five sacks now adding to what she buys.

The family of Angella is doing very well, right now the children are in holidays. They get good balance diet every week. Much as she gets a lot of challenges in the business, sometime loss in business, but she has also ensured that, she gets a helper who assists her run the business.

She has promised to complete her loan refund soon. And thanks all Kiva lenders for the good supportive service given to her.

Thanks,

Hellen
