Marthe Mengi makes and delivers to her customers shikwangues (a kind of bread made of cassava flour). It is a principal food for the Congolese in Kinshasa. She started in this business in 1998 while including a woman who used to make it. In October 1998, Marthe learned to make it. She bought a sack of cassava with the money earned from accumulated commissions and started developing her own business. This business improved nicely in 1999 through 2006, when she got divorced. With $320 in capital, Marthe decided to work with determination and good managing in order to realize her dream of opening one day a butcher shop for goats.

With the loan she obtained in this month of April, she diversified her business by buying a box of bird thighs and one box of turkey meat to be resold, so as to grow her revenues from her business, which presently generates $60 of profit per week. Her current capital amounts to $235.

Marthe is 38 years old, divorced, and the mother of nine children, ages 4 to 22. Five of them live with her, and three attend school.
