The supportive group members of El Mejor Progreso are from Masaya city. They have worked with Adim for several cycles because they feel that it is an institution that has believed in them. They feel like they are part of the Adim family. All of the group members sell in the municipal market.

Ligia, the coordinator of this group, has a stall in the market where she sells fruits and vegetables. With six years of experience, she knows how her business goes. She has seen how with each loan she is able in increase her inventory. She is a young mother of 34 with four adolescent children. She dreams that they will be able to finish their high school studies so that they can take care of themselves. Her husband is a farmer on family land. She buys what he produces and sells it for a better price in the market. Everything that she has achieved encourages her to keep working and staying with Adim. She lets her group know this, and that is why she is in charge of turning in the payment to make sure it is on time.

Mayra del Socorro sells various products like detergent, toothpaste, soap, etc. She has been selling in the market for five years. She buys from businesses that sell wholesale. That way she gets a bigger margin of earnings. She does not have children to take care of, and her husband is in Costa Rica working. He sends her remittances of not very much money, but it does help with her expenses.

Matea sells perishables. She has 4 single children who live with her. They all go to school, and the oldest goes to the University. She has more than thirty years of working in the market. She knows that a loan is based on trust, and it is clear that they payment should be on time. Her husband is a wood craftsman, and he helps with the educational expenses of the children.

Rita de los Angeles Calero sells trout and various products. She is a widow, and she lives with her two children. Her son is 21, and her daughter is 25. They are both single. They help her sell at her stall. Her business has given her a living. In Adim she has learned to invest her money better, and she has learned about loans.

Important Information About This Loan
In mid 2008, a movement began in Nicaragua called “Movimiento No Pago” (a movement for non-payment of loans). This movement, supported mostly by farmers of the north of Nicaragua with ties to the left-wing party in Nicaragua, has been organizing protests and making it difficult for some branches of microfinance institutions to operate normally. This movement has been fed by the global the economic crisis, which has made it more difficult for Nicaraguans to pay back their loans. This group has submitted a law to the government to create a moratorium on debt repayment. If passed, the law could have a severe effect on the microfinance industry and banking sector in Nicaragua. Recent information indicates that the situation may be improving as the President of Nicaragua has spoken out against this law and would not support its passage in its current form. The network of microfinance institutions in Nicaragua (ASOMIF) has been negotiating with the government in support of an alternative proposal. Kiva, along with 25 other funders from 9 countries, has signed onto a letter to the Nicaraguan government urging a resolution to this situation without enacting a moratorium on debt repayment. The potential passage of the debt moratorium increases the risk of lending in Nicaragua.
