Simon Okiror is married and has 7 children.

Simon Okiror started a drug shop after selling 3 goats he had reared at home for three years. He got some profits and decided to divert to a drug shop business (buying and selling of human medicines).

This business is special in that it deals in the human medicine and is located in the village. Today, so many people are sick in the community such that the small health centers in the villages doesen't have enough medicine to give out to the patients. Most medical personels just recommend their patients to go and buy medicine in private drug shops, for the Govornment really stocks medicine in the rural heath centres.

But this bussiness is strategically placed deep in the rural area. Given a loan of $500, Simon plans to increase the stock by buying more medicines that is not in his stock and yet it is very much needed by the patients in the village. This will make this bussiness to earn more profit to pay the loan and increse the stock. This will fetch him enough money and profit that can help him in his family and refund of the loan.

He attended training on business skills organized by VEF and is very capable of using this loan well and repaying it in full.

Business Update.

Entrepreneur: Simon Okiror
Location: Soroti, Uganda

To day, the most important place to every person in Uganda both in town and Villages around are the following:

• Health Centres

• Dispensaries

• Clinics

• Drug shops

The most common killer disease here in Uganda more than HIV/Aids is Malaria. In each family at least there are 2-3 member of the family suffering from malaria each.

The cause is that the swarm is un controlled mosquitoes are all around due to lakes, rivers, wells, swamps, stagnant water’s are all around. Uganda receives rainfall through out the year. So water is ever flowing.

Now this business that is deep in the village acts as a bridge between the patents and the hospital. From the place of this business to Soroti town is 34 kilometers.

When this business got the loan money, stocked their drug shop with all sorts of medicine that can treat malaria and some first aid measures.

They have over 200 customers coming for medicine from far and near each day. According to their book keepers record.

Every each day they can sell up to 300,000/= Ugandan shillings with a profit of 80,000/= Shs

This makes me to believe that of all our Kiva business, this is the only high profited business.

I will give you more details of this business in the next Journal.

Thanks for supporting this business.

This business sold of their items of different kind of produce that they bought with the loan money. They got 40% profit of the total sell because they were lucky that traders from Kenya crossed over to Uganda and bought their goods.

They didn’t spend money in hiring the Vehicles to go out to the main market to meet the middle man.

These were the commodities sold:

1. Millet 1,200 Kgs

2. Sorghum 960 Kgs

3. Simsim 600 Kgs

4. Peas 800 Kgs

5. Beans 1,360 Kgs

6. Cash nuts 2,200 Kgs

7. Sunflower 700 Kgs

8. Dry cassava 1,840 Kgs

Right now, they are stocking another lot of many other items. They are targeting to sell them before Chrismas time. According to their book keepers record, this business is profitable.

They will be able to increase the stock and also raise money for baying back the loan money.

Thanks a lot for supporting this business.

The drug shop is inceasingly expanding both the drugs, the customers and even the place where the drug shop operates from, is expanded.

More drugs are stocked of various diseases, more patients are flocking the place and in most cases some come to the drug shop when they are extremely ill, and because of that serious case, he has got emergency beds (rest rooms) if the patient is un able to walk back home after treatment.

The drug shop has become so vital in the community, because it has got laboratory services operating now. It is also used as a sensitization centre about AIDs scourge, six killer diseases in children and prevention measures of controlling malaria.

Thank you for supporting this business because it’s making a different in the poor people in the community where it’s situated. Even the owner of the drug shop is benefiting too.

Thanks, HAPPY NEW YEAR

I send you all my appreciattional greetings to you all my funders. First and fore most Glory be to the heavenly father who has always protected, provided and blessed me in all ways that I am a live up to date. I have been running a medicine shop (drug shop). Since for 2 years till I saw no more progress in my life and business. I used to struggle much on how to live with my family. But I thank God that in October 2005, God blessed me with a loan from Kiva. Kiva has made it possible to increase my drug shop by resurrecting it, and it has increased by 50%, my customers have increased possibly because how they can all the drugs that they need for treatment of common diseases like malaria, cough, flue, and others I can now eat meat atleast four times a week, family clothing has become possible as my Children can now afford uniform for school, I can now travel to the City to buy drugs cheaply and come and sell in my drug shop with a lot of profits.

The drug shop has helped much the rural people of my Community in that the people used to suffer travel to town areas to seek medical help in hospitals and expensively where most people I could die of common diseases that my drug shop is now able to treat before the situation worsens. The people are being helped much with the drug shop and now in a day I received more than 30 sick people that after visiting my drug shop get treated and became fine at affordable treatment see people no longer die of diseases like malaria, diarrhea as the drug shop is near them and they get treatment at any moment and access drugs that they deserve at the drug shop.

I want once more to thank you for supporting me, this loan has helped me so much and most the people of my community to restore their health and now they are able to carry on them daily struggle of work as it was before in the case where they fail sick and fail to work causing them to die and became poorer and poorer. Kindly continue to fund us through Kiva loan and surely our lives always of living with change positively.

Grate Joy will feel my heart if you will be able to continue funding us through Kiva loans so that even other people who did not get the chance for getting a loan from Kiva when we get so that their lives can also be improved and eventually changed.

Yours,

Simon Okiror.
