Mr. Cecilio Hernández Hernández is a 61-year-old micro-entrepreneur, who lives with his wife and three children, in a rural community in Costa Rica, called Mollejones de Platanares Pérez Zeledón. Mollejones is a community located 150 kilometers south of Costa Rica's capital, San José. It is 850 meters above sea level. They cultivate vegetables and coffee along with other kinds of activities like raising fat cattle and pigs. There are also some organic agricultural projects and vegetables in hydroponics. Besides agriculture, the community has mechanical workshops, a supermarket, small restaurants, and a furniture store.

His micro-business is in the dairy field. He produces milk and its derivatives, which he then sells to the community and the surrounding towns. His clients seem very satisfied that they can get a hold of fresh products that are made in a trustworthy environment by a local person.

He reports that he has always had cows and calves so he knows how to care for and how to treat the animals so they produce efficiently. However, it wasn't until five years ago that he turned it into a micro-business.

All micro-businesses need to grow, which is why ¢650,000 are needed to invest in the purchase of a cow and a calf so he can increase his production and satisfy demand. This will really help him improve his and his family's living conditions.

Mr. Cecilio is a client of Empresa de Crédito Comunal Bancruce one of the 100 member organizations of EDESA in Costa Rica. This is his first loan and he hopes to pay it off successfully.

Update on Cecilio

Entrepreneur: Cecilio Hernández Hernández
Location: San José, Costa Rica

Cecilio received his loan recently and used it to purchase a female cow and her young calf. He now has a total of 10 cows and calves, which he uses for milk production. He sells the milk to his neighbors and throughout the community. Recently, he and his wife also tried using some of the milk to make cheese. While this takes time, the price for cheese is much higher than for milk.

In addition to the dairy production, Cecilio recently implemented a new project to convert the animal waste into gas and organic compost. The Costa Rican Ministry of Agriculture provided training and donated supplies for several farmers in the community to build anaerobic digesters. Cecilio now has a process for channeling the waste down to his homemade digester. After several days of fermentation, the waste is converted to gas, which Cecilio pipes in to his kitchen. He and his wife are now able to cook with this gas. Additionally, they then use the remaining waste as organic compost for their garden. Cecilio is very proud of the digester and feels that sustainability is very important in his farming.

Please click on the video below to see a short video of the very jovial Cecilio and his new cow and calf.
