Don Reinaldo Leiva Acuña is 53 years of age, married to Ana María Araya and the father of two children. He lives in a rural community in Costa Rica called Mollejones de Platanares, in the Canton of Pérez Zeledón. Mollejones is a community located 150 kilometers (94 miles) south of San José Province, the capital of Costa Rica. It is 850 meters (2,800 feet) above sea level. They grow vegetables and coffee here and are also developing other activities such as raising and fattening pigs. There are also projects involving organic farming and hydroponics. In addition to agriculture, the community has mechanical workshops, a supermarket, some small restaurants (coffee bars) and a furniture-making shop. Don Reinaldo works at farming, particularly growing coffee with which he has 25 years experience. He says that during that time he has had some periods when he has done well, and others when he has had to cope with problems such as low crop prices or natural occurrences that damaged his crops. Nevertheless, he feels that the coffee market, one way or another, is always good and so the necessity of this loan which he will use to renovate an area which will be used for growing coffee and thus ensure that the yield will be optimal and the coffee of excellent quality. This will be the factor which determines the success of the project. Presently Don Reinaldo is requesting a microcredit loan of 500,000 Colons to purchase fertilizer and build seed beds in order to plant a hectare (2.5 acres) of coffee as described above. With this he hopes to improve his family's finances and to provide better opportunities for his children, especially the son who is currently in secondary school. Don Reinaldo is a member of the Empresa de Crédito Communal Bank, one of a hundred member organizations of EDESA in Costa Rica. This will be his second loan and he hopes to continue growing as a small businessman.

Update on Reinaldo

Entrepreneur: Reinaldo Leiva Acuña
Location: San José, Costa Rica

Reinaldo received his loan nearly two months ago and immediately invested it in a new coffee crop. He has worked growing coffee for nearly 25 years, but his previous crops were a poorer quality coffee bean. He also had recent problems with pests. With access to a loan from Kiva, Reinaldo tore up his old crops about two months ago and has planted seeds to start anew with a much higher quality coffee bean. In the short video clip below you can see Reinaldo describing what he purchased and the little plants that will soon turn into his next coffee crop. Coffee plants actually take nearly three years to yield their first crop, so there will be a delay in benefitting from the income from this investment. Nevertheless, Reinaldo also works as a security guard for the Ministry of Health every evening from 4pm to midnight. He will use the income from that job to support his family and make payments on the loan until the crop starts generating income itself.

In addition to the coffee, Reinaldo also grows beans and hopes to plant banana trees between the rows of coffee when he transplants them. This serves a double purpose, as it provides valuable shade for the coffee plants and also produces bananas for personal consumption and to sell in the local farmers’ market.

Reinaldo lives in a rural community called Mollejones de Platanares, about half an hour from the larger city of San Isidro de Perez Zeledon. Perez Zeledon has one of the largest farmers’ markets in the region. In addition to his own farming business and security guard job, Reinaldo also serves on the board of directors for the farmers’ cooperative that manages the market. The video below also includes shots of Reinaldo making a few purchases at the lively local farmers’ market.
