Isabelle Johnson is 45 years old and married to Claude Tometissin. She and her husband have two children, both of whom attend school. She and her family live in Gbégamey, a working-class district of Cotonou, the economic capital of Benin. Isabelle makes a living selling cereals and sundries (candy, cookies, cartons of milk, canned goods such as sardines, tomatoes and sugar, pasta, laundry and dishwasher detergents, bathroom soap etc.) at a local market in Cotonou. Her business enables her to ensure that a portion of the family expenses is covered, her children’s school education in particular. Isabelle previously obtained a loan from ALIDÉ to develop her business and paid it back without issue. She is currently looking to obtain another loan to invest in her business to better meet customer demand.

ALIDÉ means “there is always a path for the poorest” in Fon, Benin’s regional language. Benin is a small West African country next to Nigeria and has a per capita GDP of $1,500. ALIDÉ offers special loans to highly vulnerable people at an interest rate of 0%. It is part of a group that is soon launching a micro health insurance program for recipients of micro-loans.
