Ama Nyame

Ama Nyame is forty-five years old. She is a married mother of three children. One of her children has completed junior high school and is in an apprenticeship. The others are in junior high and primary school. Ama lives with her children and husband in a rented apartment in a fishing community called Aquase, near Cape Coast in the Central Region of Ghana.
She is a trader. She prepares and sells palm oil. Palm oil is prepared from palm nuts. The cooked palm is pounded, mixed with hot water, strained and boiled for several hours. The reddish substance which is the oil is skimmed off and boiled again to expel water content. Ama buys the palm nuts from the farmers in her community. She distributes the oil to retailers. Ama also sells textiles and utensils. She has been in business for eight years and wants a loan to buy raw materials in bulk. She hopes to improve her standard of living and to give her children the best education she can afford.
