We're the world's first person-to-person micro-lending website, empowering individuals to lend directly to unique entrepreneurs around the globe. To make this happen, Kiva partners with existing expert microfinance institutions.

Kiva provides a data-rich, transparent lending platform. We are constantly working to make the system more transparent to show how money flows throughout the entire cycle, & what effect it has on the people & institutions that lend, borrow, & manage it along the way. Our technology enables one-to-one interpersonal connections & lending at the lowest possible cost.

Your Mission... To change the world!
By designing and building industrial-strength platforms/systems for our microfinance partner organizations around the world, you’ll advance Kiva’s mission to alleviate world poverty. Doing what’s likely to be the most important work of your career, you’ll create robust & scalable financial systems for this vital & rapidly expanding Kiva constituency. As a member of our Partners group, you’ll be joining a small but high performing team that already boasts an impressive roster of tech talent. And the engineering value you’ll deliver comes at a most critical point in Kiva’s short history, as aggregate loans flowing through our Partners’ Platform nears $100M with nearly 575,000 lenders!

Your Responsibilities...
As an enthusiastic, sharp, full-time software engineer who wants to help us change the world even faster, we’ll ask you to:

  • Build new functionality into our Partners’ Platform by writing high quality code
  • Collaborate with business owners and other engineers to find solutions
  • Test, using both manual and automated test suites
  • Participate in the design process, prototyping new functionality
  • Anything else that Kiva needs to get done!

Your Profile...
Our ideal candidate is a software engineer who’s developed financial applications, has a passion for Kiva’s mission, plus:

  • 5+ years in back-end development (b2b or b2c) using Java or PHP
  • Knowledge of - MySQL, LAMP technologies, Agile development processes
  • Education – BSCS/BSEE from a top school
  • Attributes – collaborative / socially conscious / excited about Kiva’s growth potential / low ego
  • Wish List – experience with financial / banking / accounting applications, and salesforce.com

  • Please understand — Although Kiva runs like a SV startup, we're a non-profit organization / there's no equity or stock options / & while our salaries are in line with small non-profit companies, we can't quite compete with for-profit salaries.
