Tanzania > BRAC Tanzania

Update, July 7, 2009:
BRAC Tanzania’s delinquency rate is higher than normal as a result of difficulties moving funds from Tanzania. The organization is working with the Central Bank of Tanzania to sort out this issue and is providing regular updates to Kiva on its progress. Kiva will be sure to update this page as we learn more, and all funds received from BRAC Tanzania will be applied to delinquent loans upon receipt.

BRAC is guided by the vision to aspire and work towards a just, enlightened, healthy and democratic society free from hunger, poverty, environmental degradation and all forms of exploitation based on age, sex, religion and ethnicity. The vision is explicitly reflected in the mission statement, which is to strive to bring about positive changes in the quality of life of the poor wherever it works.
>
BRAC, a development organization began its operation in a remote, rural area in Bangladesh as a small-scale relief and rehabilitation project in 1972 to help the returning refugees to resettle and overcome the devastation and trauma of the liberation war. Soon, BRAC concentrated on developing models and scaling them up to help the poor to improve various dimensions of their lives and livelihoods. Today, BRAC has emerged as an independent, virtually self-financed paradigm in sustainable human development. It is one of the largest Southern development organizations working with the twin objectives of poverty alleviation and empowerment of the poor women. Diagnosing poverty in human terms and recognizing its multifaceted nature, BRAC approaches poverty alleviation with a holistic approach.
